The American countryside offers a wealth of beauty, but it is also home to remnants of homes that once flourished. I embarked on a journey to build a house that captured the fading elegance of these neglected structures. Through handbuilding techniques, especially slab construction, I aimed to create a space that honored the past while also integrating my emotional connection to the landscape around me.
As I constructed the walls, I realized that the house was more than just my design; it seemed to take on a life of its own. It started to resemble a weathered creature emerging from the earth rather than a polished building. Its subtle imperfections began to tell their own story, and I embraced the iconic charm of what had once been.
The inspiration for this project sprang from countless drives through rural Illinois. There, I witnessed derelict homes standing like shadows of their former selves. Once vibrant with laughter and life, they now exist in a state of slow decline. I saw trees erupt through windowpanes and vines coiling around crumbling foundations, creating an eerie beauty that illustrated their enduring stories, as nature gradually reclaimed its territory. In fact, studies show that nearly 25% of houses in such rural areas face abandonment, underscoring their poignant significance.
The neglected houses of Forgottonia became more than mere inspiration; they guided my work. I began to imagine my creation as a house and a tribute to these structures that once housed families. My vision transformed into a desire to celebrate decay and the stories embedded within it.
Technique and Craftsmanship
Every detail of the house was crafted using hand-building techniques. The foundational slabs formed a sturdy base on which I painstakingly shaped every element. This process was a labor of love, and each curve and ridge spoke to the artistic journey, and every imperfection added character.
One of the most delicate tasks involved shingling the roof. I carefully placed each shingle to ensure an ideal fit while deliberately incorporating imperfections that mimic natural aging. Each piece was not just a building material; it represented a story, carrying the weight of time, and was made to weather beautifully with age.
To enhance the project further, I used watercolor and ink washes after firing. This added layers of depth to the surface, transforming the colors to echo the natural weathering I admired in abandoned homes. With every brushstroke, I imagined the stories of these houses intertwining with my creation, offering a glimpse into their haunted pasts.
The wooden elements featured intricate carvings that mirrored the deep-rooted secrets of the forest. A touch of green coloring signified the moss thriving on aging structures, creating a bridge between humanity and nature. The house evolved into a vessel that captured memories simply by allowing nature to weave its beauty through the design I had envisioned.

A Reflection on Abandonment
As I worked, I became intensely aware of the stories each dilapidated building told. These weren't just abandoned homes; they were witnesses to a community's journey, holding onto whispers of a bygone era. The echoes of laughter and love reverberated within the beams that once sheltered families.
Building this house as a visual representation of decay became a statement about the fragility of beauty. It highlighted how easily one can abandon their roots due to economic pressure or the pull of urban life. This realization made me appreciate the homes that still stand, their crannies and cracks narrating tales of resilience over time.
With every flaw and imperfection I embraced during construction, I began to see the deeper meaning in my work. It became evident that the beauty of decay serves as a poignant reminder of resilience, a testament to both nature and human endeavor.
Breathing New Life into Memories
Throughout the project, I remained intentional about my material choices and techniques. Handbuilding allowed me to express the intertwined essence of history and artistry. As I merged my vision with the stories of the past, the house evolved into a heartfelt tribute to the remains of homes scattered across the American landscape.
Stepping back to observe my creation, I saw an artistic piece and a vibrant reflection of the memories surrounding these abandoned homes. The lines were imperfect, the colors told tales of various seasons and times, yet the heart of the construction was unmistakable.

The finished house stood as a canvas for past memories and breathed new life into the narrative of decay. It illustrated a beautiful contrast—the craftsmanship of human hands meeting the relentless force of nature, highlighting how life continues to evolve even amid abandonment.
Reflecting on the Journey
Creating this house was much more than just a construction project; it was an emotional expedition rich in craftsmanship and personal reflection. The journey allowed me to explore loss, resilience, and the essence of home in ways I had never before encountered. It became a philosophical journey, deepening my understanding of our human experience reflected in architecture.
As this handmade creation takes shape, it serves as a reminder that decay is not the end but a meaningful chapter in the ongoing story of life. Through art and design, we can breathe life into forgotten beauty, ensuring that the memories of the past continue to resonate within us.
